Fantasy Writing Contests: Pros, Cons and Scams
“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This quote is the perfect description of this blog.
The information template was ready and the search entered. My big plans to provide a listing of fantasy writing contests with opening and closing dates and prizes were squashed. Disappointment soon followed as many of the listings on the first five search pages had closing dates of 2013 or 2014.
After altering the search, I found the Christopher Fielden website — a listing of the better active writing contests. The information was presented well and updated often. As of this writing (Dec. 15, 2014), the latest update was December 7, 2014.
I did find a “Writers Beware” blog from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. A summary was provided listing problems with some writing contests, and it identified scam contests. It listed pro’s and con’s of various writing contests.
As a young boy at family gatherings, I recall listening to the men after a meal. The opinions around the subjects of politics, car brands, hippies, and rock n roll filled the room with energy like aromatic smoke from a pipe. But, when the story telling began everyone found a seat or patch of floor. We sat for hours absorbing the stories, fact or fiction, that shaped who we became and it strengthened our imaginations. Fifty years later I know that a world without imagination would be pretty boring.
